David's Tomb

A revered Mount Zion shrine traditionally identified as the burial place of King David.

Overview

The shrine lies beneath the Upper Room complex.

Biblical significance

David established Jerusalem as Israel's royal capital and became central to the biblical promise of a coming Davidic king fulfilled by Christians in Jesus.

Historical background

The present location is traditional. Scripture places David's burial in the City of David, and there is no archaeological basis for confidently identifying this medieval shrine as his actual tomb.
