Overview
Jerusalem's Old City contains the Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Armenian Quarters and many of the world's most significant religious sites.
Biblical significance
Jerusalem stands at the centre of vast portions of Scripture — from David and Solomon to the temple, the prophets, Jesus' death and resurrection and the birth of the early church.
Historical background
The city has been built, destroyed, rebuilt and expanded repeatedly. Much of the present street layout and architecture reflects Roman, Byzantine, Islamic, Crusader, Mamluk and Ottoman periods rather than the biblical period alone.
What you will see
Ancient streets, city gates, archaeological remains, markets, churches, synagogues, mosques and holy sites.
