Overview
Jaffa, the biblical Joppa, is one of the Mediterranean coast's ancient harbour cities and has served as a gateway between the sea and the land of Israel for thousands of years.
Biblical significance
Jonah departed from Joppa while attempting to flee from God's call. In the New Testament, Peter raised Tabitha from the dead here and later received the vision that prepared him for the mission to Cornelius and the Gentiles.
Historical background
Joppa was an important coastal port in the biblical period. Timber for the temple was brought through the port, and its strategic position made it an important gateway through many later periods of history.
What you will see
Visitors can explore the lanes of Old Jaffa, the historic harbour, archaeological remains, churches and viewpoints overlooking the Mediterranean and modern Tel Aviv.
