Cana

The Galilean village remembered for Jesus' first recorded sign — turning water into wine.

Overview

Christian tradition remembers Cana as the setting of the wedding feast described in John 2. The precise location of biblical Cana remains debated, with Kafr Kanna and Khirbet Qana among the proposed sites.

Biblical significance

John records Jesus turning water into wine at a wedding in Cana, describing it as the first of His signs through which He revealed His glory. Cana is also connected with the healing of an official's son and with Nathanael.

Historical background

The identification of modern Kafr Kanna with biblical Cana is traditional rather than archaeologically certain. Churches and pilgrimage sites in the village commemorate the Gospel account.

What you will see

Visitors may see churches commemorating the wedding at Cana, traditional stone vessels and the modern Galilean village. Some groups also use the setting for marriage-vow renewal.
