Overview
Jaffa — biblical Joppa — is one of the ancient ports of the eastern Mediterranean. Today its stone lanes, harbour and historic buildings form part of modern Tel Aviv-Jaffa.
Biblical significance
Jonah sailed from Joppa while attempting to flee God's call. In the New Testament, Peter raised Tabitha from the dead here and, while staying with Simon the Tanner, received the vision that preceded his visit to Cornelius. Jaffa therefore becomes a significant setting in the gospel's movement beyond the Jewish world.
Historical background
Joppa served as an important coastal gateway for thousands of years. Timber brought from Lebanon for Solomon's temple was landed here, and the city appears repeatedly in biblical and later Mediterranean history.
What you will see
Visitors walk through Old Jaffa, with its ancient lanes and harbour, St Peter's Church, archaeological remains and viewpoints across the Mediterranean.
